Where did you go abroad and when did you go?
“I went to Seoul, South Korea during July of 2019. I took AVIT 208, AVIT 405 at Korea Aerospace University. https://www.kauisp.com/”
Why did you go abroad?
“I went abroad for several reason.
I love to travel, especially when I can spend 3+ weeks in one spot,
I didn’t have to take a semester off of flying to do this program,
I was able to take courses that applied to my major (not just electives),
Korean food is amazing! All of it, not just the BBQ and Soju,
I love meeting new people and this program brings people together from all over the world. I believe there were people from 19 countries in the program, and I’m still in contact with several of them more than two years later.”
What advice do you have to give to anyone who is thinking about going abroad?
“Go for it! The easiest time to travel abroad is while you’re in college, before you settle down with a family and a career. You don’t need to take time off of work, you don’t need to coordinate schedules with others. Korea is a great place to get out of your comfort zone and experience a non-western culture. A specific piece of advice I give to people traveling internationally (no matter the reason) is what I call the McDonald’s Index (it might also be an actual thing, I don’t know). The exchange rate is only half the information you need to budget the trip. 1 USD = 1,171 Korean Won. But what does 1,171 Won actually get you? To answer that I look up the price of McDonald’s combo meals. If those prices are on par with ours, then you know it will be about the same cost to go out to eat there, if they’re more expensive, then plan to spend more money you’re used to for the average night out.”
